About me

I’m a scientist looking to change how we do science.

Hi, I’m Amy Teffer.

Yes, I “do the science,” but I also do a lot of other stuff. I'm mother to a feral firecracker 6-year-old daughter and wife to a tall, handsome, toy collecting, LEGO loving dude. I also have a sweet doggy and a teenage boy cat. I love connecting with the people who have a passion for nature, in any form. I’m a visiting lecturer at Mount Holyoke College. I’m also an artist of sorts and love to try new mediums and challenge myself to create within the bounds of daily life. Which is…challenging. I’m open about emotional and mental health issues I’ve faced and encourage you to find the support networks you need to thrive.

A few things to know about me

I’m a mom scientist. Sometimes it’s awesome. And sometimes…

The challenges facing early career parents are enumerable. I’m focused on initiatives that can make life easier for early career science moms. Ya know that “leaky pipeline” as many like to call it? Yeah, that pipeline is a fallacy and I’m not a leak thank you very much. The problem is that our broken system can’t meet the needs of those individuals who need to meet the needs of other humans. Go figure. If you are into social justice and equity, I’m all about it. Let’s chat. There are a lot of brilliant humans out there, caring for smaller humans, and struggling to do both. I want to create space for early career parents to thrive and be productive to the extent they are willing and able.

Science needs art.

By harnessing our own creativity and recruiting artistically inclined individuals in our communities, we can draw in a broader audience through media expressions that captivate and inspire. Creative data visualization is one example the integration of art and science that has been successfully implemented to engage the public. As humans, our brains can be tapped in infinite ways to spark creative thought. I believe we can use art and creativity to not only present results, but to discover new ways to address increasingly complex problems facing our planet.

Good people are being treated poorly by broken systems.

Join me in an effort to flip the tables in STEM and put them back together in an equitable configuration. We need diverse perspectives, we need accessibility, and we need trust. To make this happen, we need a space where individuals can peel back the layers of stress and anxiety accrued from years of chasing unachievable career goals under biased leadership. Break the bounds holding you back and navigate your unique career path. (Shout out to Picky Bars for the shirt!)
